Halloween Spider Cake..or Goth Wedding Cake?
October 27, 2009 at 2:26 pm | In Bridal Fare, Cake Decorating, Merry Halloween, {the atomic cakery} | 2 CommentsI made this cake last week to donate for a cake auction to benefit a local elementary school. My good friend Rich and Moon Albright have their two adorable daughters in the school there, and quite honestly, I would do anything for those sweet little girls!
Each tier has a layer of pumpkin spice cake and a layer of classic chocolate. I frosted it with cream cheese and left it a little messy on purpose. I used Wilton Sparkle Gel for the cobwebs, and the spiders are made of black fondant and hacked-up Twizzlers. I thought the spiders needed just a little touch of cuteness, so instead of a red hourglass like a black widow spider, I dyed some fondant red and used an Exacto to cut out li’l cupcakes. Instant cuteness.

I think this cake would make an amazing wedding cake for a goth or Halloween wedding. Add a couple more layers and cover it in fondant, and you’re in business. My amazing and talented friend Tiffany of Studio Flower did the flowers for a goth wedding this past weekend. I would have loved to be a guest at that one!
Happy Birthday Dad! The Big 6-O!
October 1, 2009 at 1:41 pm | In Cake Decorating, {the atomic cakery} | 1 CommentWe had a huge celebration for Dad’s 60th this past weekend. The whole family came in town to enjoy an afternoon full of funny old pictures, Jim n Nicks bbq, and of course…cake! I’ve spent the last few weeks working on all the little pieces that made up Dad’s cake. I wanted to try to encompass as much of his life in gumpaste that I possibly could. It turned out pretty good if I do say so myself!
Dad celebrated his 35th anniversary as an accountant with AmSouth/Regions just two days before his birthday, so I did an old-school calculator complete with tape, his birthday on the display screen, and his first name, Raybon (everyone calls him Wayne though) as the logo. There is also a “No. 60″ pencil (that broke about into three pieces, boo) and a purple and gold ribbon-clad diploma from the University of Montevallo.

This is our little family dog Joey. He’s the dachshund that our parents got us the summer my mom went to back to school to get her masters back in 1994. I guess they felt guilty for abandoning their children for 3 months, so Joey is what we got to ease the pain. And let me tell you, Joey was the 4th child. The day he died we all went out for a big family dinner and we laughed and cried and reminisced about our beloved Joey. Today, Joey is an angel in heaven, as the figure clearly represents.

Dad was a military brat growing up, taking him allover the world to live. So in various shades of green I cut out each state and country he’s lived in. And yes, Panama is supposed to be in two parts! It’s not broken, Mom. There’s this little thing called the Panama Canal that goes through it. Geez.

Dad was in the Navy and served in Vietnam from 1967-1969. His dog tags have his nickname, “3 Beers Boody” etched into them, because he drank the first beer, dropped the second one, and gave the third one away. So he says. I painted the tags and the rope on the anchor with shimmery powder to make the sheen. Ooh la la.

So this was an ode to one of the biggest inside joke in the Boody family. Whenever you ask Dad what he wants for Christmas, he just says, in all seriousness, that all he wants is to see the smiles on our faces on Christmas morning. Although sometimes, he just wants socks and underwear. I think the socks and Christmas box turned out darn cute.

And perched right on top is dad in his mid-life mobile. There’s a young, brunette Wayne Boody at the wheel and his best friend, our new little dachshund, Scout, in the passenger’s seat.

Happy birthday, Daddy! I love you!

Lovebirds!
May 13, 2009 at 2:03 pm | In Bridal Fare, Cake Decorating, {the atomic cakery} | 3 CommentsCongratulations to Grant and Katie McDaniel! I had the priviledge of making this sweet couple’s cakes for their wedding. She is the sweetest gal ever, with incredible style to boot, and you will go completely ga-ga over her wedding. Check out the photos and slideshow at Mint & Sage, the amazing photographers behind these beautiful pictures.

She got her birdie cake toppers from an Etsy shop; I’ll keep you posted if I find out what store it is. Aren’t they great?!

Katie wanted Grant to have a gumpaste model of his Blackberry Pearl cell phone on his groom’s cake, and I was happy to oblige!
Congratulations!!

July 1, 2008 at 4:48 pm | In Cake Decorating, Friends are friends forever!, {the atomic cakery} | 4 CommentsHappy big 3-0 to Chuck Hooten (who will always be “Churck” to me, thanks to a misprint in a church bulletin). Chuck is quite a character with a very distinctive style. And when his milestone birthday rolled around, I knew that I could immortalize him perfectly in gum paste. His dirty wash jeans, army fatigue cap, and arm tattoo are just very…Chuck! So one Boston Cream Cake, some piano keys, and a messy kitchen later…
So with any cake decorating attempt, I always reflect on what I did super, and what I need to work on. For this one, I learned two things. First, if something needs to stand vertical on a cake, use gum paste and not fondant (um, drunken piano keys?). The second is not to let my husband carry my cakes…because I had to redo the piano when we got to the UCF House!
*7/3 – update: I don’t know what the flip is going on, but this picture isn’t showing up. Sorry to anyone whose having problems with this on their browser.*
Happy Birthday Teresa Ann!
April 17, 2008 at 2:01 pm | In Cake Decorating, It Cakes the Take | Leave a CommentI used my mom’s birthday as an excuse to try my hand with the art of gum paste. Which is a little selfish, I know, but she loved it and I’m actually kinda proud of it! It definitely looks like a first attempt, but it’s cute no less. Admittedly I need a little work on my icing skills, but at the time all I had was my ghetto-not-so-fab cake turntable by Wilton. Anyway, I based the teacup off of her china, Rosalinde by Havilande, and although mine is a slightly cartoonier version, she knew exactly what it was. The look on her face was priceless! (And she still has it sitting on her buffet in the dining room.)
For the cake itself, I did a classic white cake via Martha, and the icing was hers as well. I did however add a couple teaspoons of strawberry extract which tasted absolutely divine. I’m signed up for a gum paste flower class at a local bakery, so wish me luck on my next foray into advanced cake design…
My First Wedding Cake!

I’m so excited! Yesterday I finished my first wedding cake! It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, and my friend and co-worker, Loren Wood (who legitimately, with her culinary degree, is a wedding cake maker), gave me the chance to be her assistant baker/decorator for a wedding she was hired to do. I made all of the rounded white flowers that look like paper whites, Loren made those beautiful chrysanthemums, and we hired a crazy women to do the dogwoods (she messed them up big time by airbrushes the centers green–we fixed them, but I can’t tell you how). I think it turned out SO beautiful! We are for hire if you live in the Birmingham region and want a cake! The cake was a lemon white cake with vanilla bean swiss meringue buttercream frosting. I wish I could share the recipe with you, but it’s not really mine to share! So I guess you’ll just have to hire us if you want to try it. Sneaky, I know.
Can you see the sparkles on the flowers? Preeeettyyyy.
